Energy Department Announces Radioactive Waste Strategy ...

The U.S. has taken another step on a seemingly endless path to address the fate of some 68,000 metric tons of high-level radioactive waste currently stored all over the country at some 100 operating nuclear power plants and other facilities.

On Jan. 11, the Department of Energy announced a new nuclear waste strategy that for the first time would include selecting and constructing at least one temporary, centralized storage facility for spent nuclear fuel and other radioactive waste. The plan also includes selection and construction of at least one permanent geological repository.

The strategy, however, would put off the interim facility for a decade and the repository would not be expected to be in operation until 2048?more than 100 years after the dawn of the nuclear age and 50 years after a congressionally mandated deadline in which the Yucca Mountain, Nevada, repository was supposed to be in operation.

The strategy is DOE?s plan to implement a year-old report by the 15-member Blue Ribbon Commission on America?s Nuclear Future. The commission was created by Energy Secretary Steven Chu in 2010 to assess radioactive waste options in light of President Barack Obama?s decision to cancel construction of the Yucca Mountain repository.

DOE?s report largely mirrors the commission?s recommendations. Among many provisions, DOE and the commission recommend a major reform of the repository site selection process that Congress established in the 1980s. The modifications include a phased development approach, more incentives to encourage communities to volunteer to be a home to a radioactive waste site, and creation of a nongovernment organization to direct the overall radioactive waste handling process.

Such changes will require new legislation. Several members of the Senate have offered proposals, but in the House of Representatives, most Republicans, including Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), chairman of the Energy & Commerce Committee, have criticized DOE and the commission for failing to restart Yucca Mountain. That choice, however, was specifically ruled out in Obama?s charge to the commission.

In a statement, Upton said: ?If politics are allowed to derail a project set forth in 1983, there is no reason to believe this new effort will be any more successful. We have the responsibility under the law to pursue Yucca Mountain as the nation?s long-term nuclear waste solution.?

'Temple Run 2' quickly climbs to top of Apple's free-app chart

Imangi Studios, the developer behind "Temple Run," has come out with a sequel to the popular game, releasing "Temple Run 2" for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

The new game launched late Wednesday night and is already atop Apple's App Store chart for free apps.

In "Temple Run 2," it isn't enough to simply run, slide and jump. Imangi has added more moves, including swinging from a rope and riding in a mine cart. The new game also features different environments and more detailed graphics.

The fourth iteration of the Windows Intune service was launched in December, with the added ability to manage devices using Window 8, Windows RT and Windows Phone 8. Intune, hosted on the Windows Azure public cloud, already had the ability to manage iOS and Android devices.

Also in December, the company released its Service Pack 1 for Systems Center 2012, which added the ability to manage Windows Server 2012, SQL Server 2012 and Windows 8.

Company Portal

Out of the box, Intune provides the Company Portal that can be stocked with apps. Users can then search, browse and install apps from the Portal, even if there is no connection to the corporate network.

In announcing the new capabilities, Microsoft said that, with ?one management console? provided by Cloud OS, IT departments can ?crack the bring-your-own-device challenge.?

The company sees its Cloud OS as essentially being a data center in the cloud, with the ability to manage apps, services, data and devices.
